HP to decide fate of webOS within two weeks

Hewlett-Packard’s webOS hardware is dead and buried but the fate of the platform itself remains to be determined. HP may hold on to the OS and use it on printers and PCs, and there have been plenty of rumors surrounding talks the company is having in an effort to license the platform to other firms. According to an interview in French newspaperLe Figaro, HP CEO Meg Whitman has gone on record in stating that a decision regarding the fate of webOS will be made within two weeks. HP took possession of webOS when it acquired Palm for $1.2 billion in 2010, and that buy yielded one failed tablet that was discontinued shortly after launching, three failed smartphones and soon, perhaps,

Australian court overturns Samsung tablet ban in Apple patent case

Samsung recently won a appeal lawsuit against Apple in Australia that overturned a ban on sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1tablet in the country. An appeals court, which recently said the ban was “not terribly fair” to Samsung, explained that the original judge in a lower court had made a mistake in approving Apple’s request for an injunction against the tablet. “We cannot see how Samsung?s conduct in refusing the offer of an early trial could properly be weighed,? the appeals court said, noting that the original court ?erred in principle” for basing part of its decision on a ban on that ruling. Samsung is allowed to resume sales of the tablet beginning on December 2nd,Bloombergnoted. “The ruling clearly affirms that Apple?s

Nielsen: Android extends smartphone platform lead, Apple still top vendor

Android further cemented its position as the most widely used smartphone operating system in the United States over the past three months according to new data just released by Nielsen. During the three-month period from August through October, Android’s market share ticked up to44.2% from 43% between July and September. Apple’s iOS platform grew marginally from 28% to 28.6% and RIM’s BlackBerry OS shed three points to fall to 17%. Microsoft’s share is still barely a blip on the radar. Apple’s 28.6% kept it at the top of the vendor list over the past three months and HTC was still the No.2 vendor over all, followed by RIM and Samsung. Nokia Lumia 800 sold out in U.K. despite rumors of weak demand

Nokia’s stock took a hit this week as Pacific Crest analystJames Faucette cut his sales forecast for Nokia’s first two Microsoft-powered smartphones. Having initially estimated that fourth-quarter sales of Nokia’s Windows Phones would approach 2 million units, the analyst dropped his expectations to just 500,000 devices, saying early checks indicated lower than expected sell-through.Bernstein Research analyst Pierre Ferragu piled on, writing in a note this week thatNokia’s new phones offer no “breakthrough innovation” or price advantage that might draw attention away from the competition. Just one day after Faucette shared his new estimates, however,Nokia confirmed that its hotly anticipated Lumia 800 smartphone has been a big seller across the UnitedKingdom. Verizon?s Galaxy Nexus likely priced at $199.99

While Verizon Wireless has yet to announce any release details surrounding the latest Nexus smartphone, a series of leaks seemingly paint a complete picture of the carrier’s launch plans. A purported internal document revealed on Wednesday points to a December 8th release for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and now a leaked Verizon Wireless advertisement lists the handset’s on-contract price as $199.99. The Galaxy Nexus had previously been rumored to launch with a price tag closer to $300, so it is unclear if the pricing in the Verizon ad is standard or part of a holiday promotion. Verizon is expected to announce release details for the Galaxy Nexus some time next week. [Via Engadget] Read

Samsung to launch Google TV next year

Samsung’s visual display division president Yoon Boo-Keun confirmed to The Wall Street Journalon Tuesday that his company plans to launch a television with Google TV software next year. The Google TV platform allows users to browse the web and interact with a television in a similar fashion as they would with a computer. However, Google TV products, such as Logitech’s Revue set-top box, have failed so miserably that Logitech’s CEO described the product as a “mistake.” It is unclear how Samsung plans to differentiate its televisions from set top boxes, which suffered from poor sales, but new Google TV software paired with Samsung’s position in the television market could help raise consumer awareness. HTC reportedly tapped to build Facebook phone, code-named ?Buffy?
